Lewis Howes is a New York Times bestselling author, with his most recent work being The Mask of Masculinity. He’s built a multi-million dollar online media company, speaks all over the world, and is an advisor for billion dollar brands. Lewis is the host of the School of Greatness podcast, which shares inspiring stories from the most brilliant business minds, world class athletes and influential celebrities on the planet to help you find out what makes great people great.

Lewis’ dream was to be an NFL football player, and he received tryouts with multiple teams. He joined the Arena Football League and played until he was injured and required surgery.

 

“I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life. My dream was crushed and my identity kind of shaken.”

 

Not wanting to work just any ordinary “job”, Lewis started using LinkedIn to build relationships and connecting with successful people to ask how they got to where they were in life. This led to him training people on how to use LinkedIn, which was his first experience as an entrepreneur. He then hosted LinkedIn events and as his audience grew, he wrote a book and started offering online courses about various social media platforms.

He didn’t want to be associated with a platform, so he sold his company and it was during a 6 to 8-month transition period that he realized he wanted to launch a podcast to interview people about their journey (in the process helping himself and his listeners grow).

 

“I just had a feeling the technology was going to come around where people were going to listen more”

 

Lewis launched the School of Greatness using just his iPhone to record episodes, focusing on making it better every single week and it just “took off.”

As he began to interview more people and hear from more listeners, he started to recognize patterns about what his audience wanted from him.

 

“I realized that all I’m doing is listening to my audience; what their challenges are and what their pain is”

 

Lewis recognized that he wasn’t being as authentic as he could be an he started to open up about the trauma and past pains in his life, along with his insecurities and fears. He feels that things happening in the world today is because men particularly don’t have a place to express these feelings, which is a theme he explores in his most recent book.

 

“We wear these different masks to either fit in, or to push away other people in our lives.”

 

He has fun with what he does, and he believes by doing this people can make a bigger difference and reveal themselves more.

Lewis has created his own ideal business by making sure his vision is always clear, and he has a goal to impact 100 million people and show them how to make a full-time income doing what they love. By doing this, they’ll feel more fulfilled and will treat themselves, and the people around them, better.

Consistency has been key for Lewis in building his business, as he’s always created quality content while improving on it. He also believes entrepreneurs need to create systems around this consistency and have support from a solid team. Most importantly, he reminds others to keep it simple!

 

“People are getting in their heads so much that they aren’t executing consistency.”
